How to Prevent Diamond Scratches

How to Prevent Diamond Scratches

Diamonds aren't truly invincible. After a year of wearing my engagement ring, tiny scratches caught my attention. Here's what I've learned about keeping your diamonds looking brand new.

Why Diamonds Get Scratched (Yes, Really!)

Only another diamond is hard enough to scratch a diamond. If you store diamond jewelry pieces together or wear diamond rings on adjacent fingers, scratches are basically preordained.

Smart Storage Makes All the Difference

Give each piece of diamond jewelry its own territory. Use soft fabric pouches for rings and a jewelry box with separate compartments for everything else. Don't allow diamonds to touch each other or other gemstones. Wrapping each piece in soft cloth separately works perfectly if you don't have a fancy jewelry box.

Take It Off When You Should

Remove your jewelry before:

  • Cleaning the house – Harsh chemicals and abrasive surfaces can cause damage
  • Working out – Weights and equipment can bang against your ring
  • Gardening – Soil and rocks can be rough on jewelry
  • Swimming – Cold water shrinks fingers, risking losing a ring

Keep a small dish by your kitchen sink and another in your bathroom specifically for holding rings when you need to remove them.

Regular Cleaning Prevents Buildup

Dirty diamonds are more prone to damage because dirt grit acts as an abrasive. Clean every couple of weeks: soak in warm water with mild dish soap for 20 minutes, gently brush around the diamond and setting, rinse, then pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and rough materials like paper towels.

Get Professional Checkups

Take your collection to a jeweler annually. They check for loose prongs and damage you may not have noticed, and perform professional cleaning. Loose prongs can result in losing the diamond entirely – that annual visit is worth every penny.

Be Mindful of What You Wear Together

If wearing multiple diamond pieces, space them out. Don't stack diamond rings right next to each other unless specifically designed as a set. Reduce contact points wherever possible.

The Bottom Line

Preventing diamond scratches isn't complicated – store pieces separately, remove during risky activities, clean regularly, and get professional checkups. Your diamonds will sparkle just as beautifully decades from now as they do today.
